GIORGI GAGOSHIDZE

ABASTUMANI, ABASTUMANI…

22.01.2009

This is Giorgi Gagoshidze’s second solo exhibition. In 2007, Vernissage Gallery also hosted the artist’s first solo presentation. The current exhibition, titled “Abastumani, Abastumani…”, brings together approximately 30 paintings and photographic works by the artist.

On view are scenes of Abastumani, featuring its distinctive architecture- much of which, regrettably, now stands on the verge of disappearance. The works presented at the gallery, alongside photographs taken by the artist, offer viewers an opportunity to trace the relationship between Abastumani as perceived through the artist’s eye and its present-day reality.

Giorgi Gagoshidze was born in 1983 in Tbilisi. He graduated from the Nikoladze Art College in 2002 and the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in 2007. In 2004, he completed a residency in Rome. He is the recipient of the Bank of Georgia award for the best watercolor work.

His works are held in several private collections.

In addition to his artistic practice, Gagoshidze is actively engaged in the restoration of wall paintings and has contributed to conservation projects at significant historical monuments, including: Vejini (16th c.), Zemo Krikhi (12th c.), Amashuketi (16th c.), Ubisa (14th c.), Abastumani (20th c.), Kintsvisi (13th, 16th c.), Lulashi (16th c.), Matani (16th c.), Ieli (12th c.), Dirbi (14th c.), Tsalenjikha (14th c.), Ananuri (18th c.), Laghami (10th–16th c.), and Parisvifi (10th–16th c.).
