Achievements:
1912 Traveled around Italy with Alexander Yakovlev. They visited Capri and worked on the double self-portrait ‘Harlequin and Pierrot.’
1918 He was appointed as a professor of painting at the former Petersburg Academy of Arts.
1921 Lived and worked in the Finnish villages of Mustamäki and Raivola.
Served on the organizing committee of a World of Art exhibition in Paris.
Together with A. Yakovlev opened a school of drawing and painting.
Along with other artists, did set design for skits at Nikita Balieff’s ‘La Chauve-Souris’ (‘The Bat’) cabaret in Paris.
1922 Did scenography productions at the Balaganchik Theatre in Paris. Worked on illustrations for an edition of Pushkin’s short story
‘The Queen of Spades.’
1925 Did the stage design for productions of Verdi’s ‘La Traviata’ and Tchaikovsky’s ‘Queen of Spades’ by the Russian private opera in
Paris. Worked on illustrations for an edition of Pushkin’s ‘Boris Godunov.’ Shukhaev and Yakovlev produced frescoes on the
subject of Alexander Pushkin’s tales in music for the concert hall in the Parisian suburban house of Prince Felix Yusupov.
Designes costumes for the film ‘Carmen.’
1926 He taught at the Russian Art and Industrial Institute in Paris.
1930 Shukhaev and Yakovlev painted a fresco in the Godard house in Paris.
1932 Worked in Morocco and designed a pasha villa in Casablanca and a hotel in Rabat; made 37 sketch paintings on Moroccan motifs.
Based on these sketches, he made a series of works on Morocco in the 1960s.
1934 Painted portraits of Igor Stravinsky, Feodor Chaliapin, Sergei Prokofiev, and Lina Prokofieva. Shukhaev and Yakovthe stage design
for the production of ‘Semiramis’ by Ida Rubinstein’s ballet company in Paris. Worked as a cartoonist for the first time,
producing caricatures of European politicians, writers, and public figures for Vanity Fair.
1935 Returned to the Soviet Union. He was admitted to ‘Vsekokhudoznik’ (Russian Union of Fine Arts Workers Cooperatives) and the
Leningrad and Moscow branches of the Union of Soviet Artists. He worked as a teacher, theatre production designer,
and book illustrator.
1940 He and his wife were arrested and exiled to Magadan. For three years, he worked as a woodcutter. Later, he decorated the Gorky
House of Culture, later known as the Gorky Music and Drama Theatre, in Magadan.
1947 Moved to Tbilisi at the invitation of the Griboedov Russian Drama Theater to do the stage design for Alexei Arbuzov’s comedy
‘Encounter with Youth.’
1948 Worked for the Paliashvili Opera and Ballet Theatre and the Marjanishvili Theatre in Tbilisi.
He was appointed as a professor of drawing at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts.
2007 The highest auction price - 1,807,176 USD. Christie’s, London, Great Britain.
